Physical wellness

Managing your physical health beyond physical activity and eating healthy is about understanding what can make your body most efficient and effective. This includes recognizing and respecting your own limitations.

Physical wellness program highlights:

  • Benefits of Sleep: Our sleep workshops teach how sleep impacts your life and how you can be more successful in everything you do by ensuring your sleep is helping you and not hurting you. You’ll learn new sleeping strategies like how to fall asleep easier, what are some helpful sleeping apps, and how your sleep affects your academics
  • Health Screenings: Come talk with health professionals and our Holistic Wellness Facilitators to get a snapshot of your current health status. We can test your cholesterol levels, blood pressure, eye sight, and body fat percentage.

Emotional wellness and stress management

Emotional wellness is a lifelong process of developing awareness and acceptance of one’s feelings. Emotional wellness helps you have satisfying relationships, deal with conflict, and bounce back after challenging or stressful times.

Emotional wellness program highlights:

  • Stress Management: College students frequently deal with high levels of stress. Learn how to identify symptoms of stress early and techniques to reduce stress before it becomes: unmanageable. Participants learn mindfulness and ways to change their mindset about stress to use it as a tool instead of a trigger.
  • Mental Health First Aid: This certification course teaches participants to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and how to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Alcohol education

Our work with alcohol education is primarily focused on identifying and improving environmental and personal factors that support responsible use of alcohol. We do research to develop effective interventions, evaluate campus programs, and consult campus-wide to guide best practices across the domains of campus life.

According to 2015 National College Health Assessment data, most WSU students perceive that only 5 percent of students do not consume alcohol. In actuality, roughly 21 percent of WSU students choose not to drink. Of those students who do consume alcohol, about 58 percent do so responsibly (having 4 or fewer drinks).

Alcohol-related program highlights:

  • CPR & Alcohol Safety: American Heart Association CPR/AED teaches lay responders to respond in the most effective way to a cardiac or medical emergency by activating the chain of survival and performing high quality CPR. This program will also inform you about when it is time to get help, legal facts, and how to care for someone safely until advanced medical help arrives. You will also receive certification in Adult CPR & AED, which will be provided by Health and Wellness Services.
  • Family Feud: Booze Busters: It’s time to play… Family Feud! This edition will cover alcohol related topics including the effects of alcohol, bystander intervention, what to do during medical emergencies, and WSU social norms. This interactive game will pit two groups against each other while figuring out the truth about alcohol.
  • Normal or Not? Alcohol & Social Norms: No one wants their best friend to get hurt or harm someone else. Alcohol is a common thread between the majority of violent acts, student deaths, and academic deficiencies. However, alcohol is not inherently bad. ‘Normal or Not’ will talk about the actual amount of alcohol use on WSU’s campus; it’s time to find out the truth and to stop believing the hearsay around campus.

Financial wellness

Financial health is all about having control over your current finances while still planning for the future! Achieving improved financial wellness includes informed decision-making, learning how to use credit wisely, and discovering how to reasonably save and plan for our future.

Financial program highlights:

  • Adulting 101: The definition of “adulting” is to do grown up things and to have responsibilities. We will go over financial basics, including: budgets, savings accounts, debt, spending habits, and managing paychecks. This workshop will outline how our attitudes about money influence our spending habits and go over some general financial strategies.
  • Managing the Game of Life: Join HWS in a real-life re-creation of the iconic board game. You will learn about the effect of education and career choices on income, interest and loan payments, effects based off of lifestyle choices, the effects of losing a job or taking a pay cut, the impact of taxes and debt, and the importance of investing.
