More H1N1 vaccine for WSU students

by healthycoug
Additional shipments of vaccine have allowed us to add appointments through the rest of the week for students to get the H1N1 flu vaccine. As of this morning, we have 700 doses of the H1N1 flu shot and about 30 doses of LAIV available. In the four days we have offered appointments for the vaccine, we have given it to approximately 400 students. (We had already vaccinated several hundred students prior to that.) We'd like to get the vaccine to every WSU student who wants it before Thanksgiving break. Students can schedule online or by calling 509-335-3575 to make an appointment. All H1N1 ... [more]

Update for Thursday, Nov. 5

by healthycoug
We are encouraging all WSU students to get vaccinated against H1N1 influenza. Even those students who think they may have already had the H1N1 flu should get vaccinated. The only exceptions would be students who have medical reasons to not get vaccinated.   We continue to have LAIV (nasal spray) H1N1 vaccine available at our clinic. We also have received our first allotment of the H1N1 flu shot for high-risk patients who cannot take the LAIV nasal spray. Notifications were sent out Monday to students on our high-risk waiting list. We are out of seasonal flu vaccine.   (WSU students can stop by ... [more]

We continue to have LAIV (nasal spray) H1N1 vaccine available at our clinic. WSU students can stop by before noon or after 1 p.m. during regular business hours Monday through Friday to get the vaccine. (Wait time is typically shorter in the morning.) The vaccine and visit are free. We have been told that we should continue to receive regular shipments of LAIV, but it is unknown at this time when we may receive a supply of the H1N1 flu shot. We have exhausted our supply of seasonal flu vaccine.   Certain people should not get the 2009 H1N1 LAIV. You should ... [more]

We have been told that we should continue to receive a regular allotment of LAIV, but it is unknown at this time when we may receive the H1N1 flu shot.   We continue to see new patients with influenza like illness, but our numbers remain low. Update for Thursday, Oct. 15

Between Friday last week and Wednesday this week, we were in contact with 75 WSU students with influenza-like illness. Usually at this time of year we would only see a handful of, if any, patients with flu-like illness. Our peak weeks so far have been the first two weeks of fall semester, and we hope for that to remain true throughout the school year. We are not able to report on numbers of students who may have gotten care from other providers. To date, we have hospitalized only one student for influenza-like illness, and that patient has been released from the hospital ... [more]

Is it safe to visit WSU?

by healthycoug
Yes. We do not have thousands of sick students running around campus. Out of the approximately 18,000 students in Pullman, over 98% of our population does not currently have the flu. We estimated at the peak of our patient flow that we had 2 per cent or less of our students sick at any given time. Now that patient flow has declined, we expect that number to be even lower. Additionally, the flu-like symptoms that our students have been experiencing are comparable to or even more mild than seasonal flu.
